US Tells Gaddafi To Get Out Now

Tuesday, 19 July 2011

The US has met with Gaddafi and given him notice to leave power. The meeting leaves no doubt as to their intentions.

US envoys “met with regime representatives to deliver a clear and firm message that the only way to move forward is for Gaddafi to step down. This was not a negotiation. It was the delivery of a message.” an anonymous source in Washington said. Adding that this meeting was a one-off, and there are no further meetings expected with the current regime.

This, a day after the US and 30 other countries recognized the rebel Transitional National Council as Libya’s new government. A move which makes it much easier to take action to remove Gadaffi from power by force. Action which would not have been acceptable when he was the recognised head of state.

Libyan rebels have reported advanced in recent days and made claims that they were in control of the refinery town of Brega. The front line is constantly moving, but in recent weeks, there have been signs that the embattled Libyan leader is running out of fighting men.
